Accident & Emergency Department

Our Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department provides 24-hour service for trauma and non-trauma surgical and medical emergencies. We have a multi-disciplinary trauma team to provide one-stop quality care, comprising trauma surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, medical social workers, pharmacists and nurses.

St. Thomas Hospital’s A&E is supported by 24-hour x-ray and laboratory services and advanced technologies. We also have the Mobile Clinical Assistant in an A&E environment. This wireless and highly portable technology enables doctors and nurses to better care for their patients and more effectively manage the hectic workflow in the fast-paced A&E.

Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care

Our Department of Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care is responsible for providing anesthesia for all types of surgery in the operating theatres. In addition, the anesthetists manage the critically ill patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).

The hospital is equipped with anesthetic machines and sophisticated monitoring systems to ensure the safety of patients under anesthesia. All our operating theatres and recovery rooms are well equipped with air and fluid warming systems to reduce patients’ discomfort and the risk of hypothermia. We have also introduced heat and moisture exchanger systems with bacterial and viral filtration systems.

Our ENT Department are specialists in a wide range of ear, nose and throat (ENT) and head and neck problems. The Department of Gastroenterology provides consultations as well as performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

Our Ophthalmology division provides both basic and specialised eye care services. Our consultants in various subspecialties in ophthalmology provide specialised treatments to patients (except children under 6 years old) with a wide variety of eye problems.

We have specialised equipment for argon laser treatment of diabetic eye diseases, and computerised visual field analysers for the assessment of glaucoma. Qualified optometrists help in the prescription of glasses for both adults and children.

Our Department of Endocrinology provides a wide range of services for the management of diabetes mellitus as well as hormonal disorders.

Our Diabetes Centre is staffed by endocrinologists, diabetes nurse educators, podiatrists and dietitians. All the services related to diabetes (e.g. podiatry, dietetics and retinography) are housed here, offering greater convenience for diabetic patients.

Apart from specialist clinics that care for those with complicated cases and difficult-to-control diabetes, we also have a unique one-stop Full Diabetes Assessment package, consisting of blood tests (glycated haemoglobin, creatinine, cholesterol and glucose levels, urinary micro albumin, retinal photography, podiatry assessment (for foot problems), dietary review, diabetes counseling, followed by a final review by an endocrinologist.

Our Urology Department has a comprehensive range of services for the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic adult and adolescence urological conditions. We have the expertise and surgical skills in general urology and all the subspecialties of urology. All our specialist staff have undergone training and accreditation from well-known overseas medical institutions.

Continence problems like difficulty in controlling urination, weak urinary stream, or incomplete bladder emptying often have physical, treatable causes. Sometimes, these symptoms coupled with others like presence of blood in urine, pain in the lower back or tummy area, or pain when urinating, may be warning signs of other more serious problems like stones or even cancer. Our Urology team is not only specialises in treatment of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and the genitals but also has expertise in handling male infertility and impotence.
