Venerable servant of God and the first Archbishop of Changanssery Archdiocese Mar Mathew Kavukattu initiated the move to begin a hospital in Changanssery in 1951. His grace instructed the faithful under his care to support and contribute towards this. His Eminence Cardinal Tisserant, the Prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches, on his visit to Kerala, laid the foundation stone for the hospital in 1953. On Gandhi Jayanthi day, October 2, 1955, the hospital was inaugurated officially and it started functioning the very next day. Regular rural medical camps were conducted every week and frequent visits to the patients in their houses were started at this time. The nursing care of the hospital was entrusted to Medical Mission Sisters. At the neonatal stage the hospital had only 20 beds and one doctor –. Dr.A.M.Joseph. In the short span of a decade the institution developed into 120-bedded hospital with private rooms and a high qualified and well experienced team of doctors.
Opening of St.Thomas School of Nursing was another remarkable event in the history of the hospital. Then the intake was ten nursing students, whereas the present yearly intake is 45. In 1979, The Medical Mission Sisters ended their service and handed over the administration of the hospital back to the archdiocese. Departmentalization with specialist doctors turned the face of the hospital by 1980. St.Thomas School of Medical Lab Technology with the facility to award the students DMLT with recognition of CMAI was started in the year 1999.
Towards the dawn of this millennium, the hospital turned to be leading one in central Travancore now with 400 beds and around twenty specializations with an excellent team of doctors and modern diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. In addition it also serves as a training institute for allied health workers through its collaboration with Jan Shikshan Sansthan under the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, a prestigious Deemed University. Adding modern facilities and super specializations, St.Thomas Hospital is more and more committed to serve the sick and weak as well as pledged to reach high quality medical care for the ordinary people at an affordable expense.

When you come to the hospital you bring more than an illness or condition; you bring your hopes, individual needs, and personal experience. That’s why a caring relationship with patients and families is paramount to everything we do. We have the medical knowledge. You carry the experience and expertise of knowing your own body. Your family provides valuable emotional support and information that can help the medical team. We believe this collaboration will help us empower you to make sound, critical decisions that affect your health. Only by working together can we improve your well-being and provide the best possible treatment. In nurturing this team effort we practice:
Integrity. We conduct ourselves in a fair, trustworthy manner and uphold professional and ethical standards.
Compassion. We act with empathy, understanding and attentiveness toward all others.
Accountability. We take responsibility for my actions and join with my colleagues to deliver ‘Medicine of the Highest Order’.
